Hydraulic Fracturing (fracking) is used by the gas companies to extract natural gas out of, literally, shale rock (bedrock). The gas has always been there, but the technique to access it is new. Not only are gas companies able to drill 10,000 feet into the earth, but, they are also able to drill horizontally.
The gas companies mix about 4 million gallons of water per well with sand and chemicals. They force it down the well hole, ignite it and cause fissures (fractures) in the shale rock. The gas escapes out of the rock, moves up the well and is captured at ground level.
Up to 70% of the fracking cocktail remains in the ground while the rest is stored in a lined or unlined pit until it is hauled to a treatment plant.
The above picture does a great job of illustrating fracking. BUT, it does not quite tell the true picture. The following picture shows what really occurrs. Notice the difference in the fissures.
Im sure this was written by someone that drives a car, flies on airplanes, mowes their lawn, etc... Find a way to do all that without the oil and gas industry. Oh and provide jobs to millions in the US. Was this written by Obama himself??? You cannot have the cake and eat it too. Maybe you should spend your efforts finding an alternative fuel instead of just raising fuel costs. Because that is all you are doing. No matter what bad comes from the oil and gas industry it is a needed evil so that liberals like your self can drive cars, go the work, and waste our time...

And btw the top picture is way more accurate. The bottom has dots all over it. I have been to many rigs and have never seen dots in the sky. And why is there polution coming from the storage tanks? The bottom picture looks like it was made for a kindergarden class.

Actually James,
you are correct in that most fuel today is hydrocarbon based. But clean water is an issue for folks across the political spectrum and it's no small risk we are confronting. We have designed our homes and cities around cheap and abundant fossil fuels while forgetting simple things like south-facing windows that can heat an entire home if designed right.
